How to Choose the Right Rug Size for Every Room in Your Home

Published by Kelaty on 10th Mar 2026

A complete guide to getting rug proportions right — so your space looks intentional, balanced, and beautiful.

Whether you're refreshing your living room or pulling together a bedroom scheme, choosing the right rug size is one of the most important decisions you'll make. Get it right and your room looks pulled-together and intentional. Get it wrong and even the most beautiful rug can make a space feel awkward and unfinished.

This guide walks you through exactly how to size a rug for every room in your home — with practical measurements, insider tips, and the most common mistakes to avoid.

Why Rug Size Matters More Than You Think

A rug doesn't just sit on a floor — it defines a zone, anchors furniture, and sets the visual scale of an entire room. Too small, and it looks like a postage stamp in the middle of the floor. Too large, and it swallows the room and hides beautiful skirting boards or flooring.

The golden rule: when in doubt, go bigger. Most people underestimate how large a rug needs to be. A generous rug makes a room feel more luxurious, more considered, and more spacious.

Living Room Rug Sizes

The living room is where rug sizing has the biggest visual impact. There are three generally accepted approaches:

All Legs On

All the furniture legs rest on the rug. This works best in larger rooms with big sofas and creates a very cohesive, contained look. You'll typically need a rug of at least 200 x 290cm or larger for a standard UK living room.

Front Legs On

The front legs of sofas and chairs rest on the rug, while the back legs sit on the floor. This is the most popular approach — it visually connects the furniture to the rug without requiring an enormous size. A 160 x 230cm or 200 x 290cm rug works well here.

All Legs Off

The rug sits entirely between the furniture pieces, touching nothing. This only works when the rug is being used as a decorative centrepiece rather than an anchor. A 120 x 180cm or 140 x 200cm rug can work here.

Tip: Before you buy, lay out newspaper or masking tape on the floor in the dimensions of the rug you're considering. Live with it for a day. You'll quickly see whether it works.

Dining Room Rug Sizes

The key rule for dining rooms is straightforward: the rug should be large enough that chairs remain on the rug even when pulled out. Chairs typically extend 45–60cm when someone sits down, so you need to add that to each side of your table.

For a standard dining table seating 6 (approximately 180 x 90cm), you'll want a rug of at least 260 x 200cm.

For a round dining table seating 4–6, a 200cm round rug is usually the minimum. A 240cm round rug is ideal.

Bedroom Rug Sizes

Two-Thirds Under the Bed

The most common approach. The rug slides under the bottom two-thirds of the bed, leaving roughly 50–60cm visible on each side and at the foot of the bed. For a king-size bed (150 x 200cm), you'll want at least a 200 x 290cm rug.

Bedside Rugs

Two smaller rugs placed on either side of the bed — one for each person. Sizes of 60 x 120cm or 80 x 150cm work well here.

Foot-of-Bed Runner

A longer, narrower rug placed across the foot of the bed. A runner of 70 x 200cm or 80 x 250cm creates a beautiful layered effect.

Hallway & Staircase Rug Sizes

For hallways, measure your width and subtract 15–20cm on each side. Standard runner widths of 66cm, 80cm, or 100cm suit most UK hallways. For staircases, a stair runner should be 10–15cm narrower than the stair tread.

Standard Rug Sizes: A Quick Reference

Size Best For
60 x 120cm Bedside, small bathroom, entryway
80 x 150cm Small bedroom, sofa accent
120 x 180cm Small living room, dining room for 4
160 x 230cm Medium living room, home office
200 x 290cm Large living room, master bedroom
250 x 350cm Grand living room, open-plan spaces

The Most Common Rug Sizing Mistakes

  1. Going too small in the living room. When in doubt, size up.
  2. Forgetting to account for pulled-out dining chairs. The rug needs to extend beyond where chairs land when occupied.
  3. Not measuring first. Always mark out the dimensions on your floor with tape before ordering.
  4. Ignoring the furniture layout. The rug should relate to your sofa arrangement, not just the room dimensions.
