How to Choose the Best Rug for Your Living Room

The living room rug is perhaps the most important piece of soft furnishing in your home. It defines the seating zone, sets the tone for the whole room, and does more to make a space feel finished and considered than almost any other single element.

Getting it right requires thinking about size, material, style and how the rug will work with everything else in the room. This guide covers all of it.

Step One: Get the Size Right

The most common rug mistake in living rooms is going too small. A rug that sits only under the coffee table, surrounded by furniture that floats off it, makes a room feel disjointed and under-scaled.

The general rules for living room rug sizing are:

  • All furniture legs on the rug: The most cohesive look. Works best in larger rooms with a generous rug -- typically 250x350cm or larger.
  • Front legs only on the rug: The most practical compromise. All sofas and chairs have their front two legs on the rug, which visually anchors the furniture to the zone. The most popular approach for most living rooms.
  • Rug floats between furniture: Only works in very large rooms where a small rug is used as a central accent. The rug must be large enough that it does not look like it belongs in a different room.

In most living rooms, a rug of at least 200x300cm is the minimum for the front-legs approach. For larger rooms or a more enveloping look, 250x350cm or 270x370cm is ideal. See our full rug sizing guide for room-by-room measurements.

Step Two: Choose the Right Material

Wool

For most living rooms, wool is the gold standard. It is durable, naturally stain-resistant, soft underfoot, and -- in a good-quality piece -- it only improves with age. Wool rugs are available across a wide price range and suit everything from contemporary to traditional interiors.

Viscose and Wool-Viscose Blends

If you want a rug with a beautiful sheen and exceptional softness, a viscose or wool-viscose blend is worth considering. The sheen of viscose catches light in a way that wool alone cannot, adding a quiet luxury to formal living rooms and sitting rooms. Kelaty's Hush collection is a prime example -- hand-woven from a wool and viscose blend that combines durability with beautiful lustre.

Polypropylene

If you have young children, dogs, or simply want a rug that can be cleaned with minimal fuss, a quality polypropylene rug is a practical choice. Modern manufacturing has produced polypropylene rugs that are difficult to distinguish from wool by sight -- though the feel underfoot is different.

Step Three: Consider the Style of the Room

Neutral and Contemporary Living Rooms

For rooms with neutral walls, pale furniture and a contemporary aesthetic, a rug with texture and subtle pattern adds depth without disrupting the calm. Flatweave designs, abstract geometrics and tonal neutrals all work well. See our guide to styling a rug in a neutral room for inspiration.

Traditional and Period Living Rooms

Traditional interiors are the natural home of Oriental and Persian-style rugs -- pieces with complex patterns, rich colours and deep pile. These rugs bring warmth and character to rooms with period features, wooden floors and antique or classic furniture.

Eclectic and Maximalist Rooms

In rooms where there is already a lot happening -- pattern, colour, objects -- a plain, textured rug provides a grounding note. A solid-coloured shaggy rug or a simple flatweave in a rich colour acts as a foundation rather than a focal point.

Step Four: Pile Height and Texture

  • High pile (shaggy): Luxurious underfoot but traps dust and requires more maintenance. Best in low-traffic rooms like bedrooms or reading corners.
  • Medium pile: The most versatile option -- soft enough to feel luxurious, practical enough for everyday use. Suits most living rooms.
  • Low pile and flatweave: Easiest to maintain, work well over underfloor heating, and suit contemporary and Scandinavian-style rooms.
